Adult learners are unique in their needs, particularly on an individual basis. We have found that Andragogy is able to facilitate the kind of learning that is autonomous and takes into account particular needs at specific life stages that fundamentally Pedagogy is not able to deliver. This is not to denigrate Pedagogy. However, it is not suitable for adult learners who require independence and authentic formats of learning. Simply put, adults are obviously not children, and we should be educating and training them in ways that facilitate a positive learning experience and that meets their needs and aspirations.

It's also important to understand that many young people are able to learn independently, with many hosting a 'hidden curriculum'. You will know this type of learner - they come to study knowing what they want out of it. They expect to be treated like an adult, although they are often not saddled with the responsibilities of being an adult (the learner self-concept).

We know that many HEIs are now moving to this type of model through Constructive Realignment in moving the responsibility to learn to the learner, but this a relatively newer movement.
