We have found that Andragogy highly supports the learning needs and characteristics of people who are developing a career or are a practitioner.

Pedagogy is poorly placed to deliver education and training to this cohort as it is focused on the needs of children and adolescents, teaching that is prescriptive and authoritative, and takes place in a classroom. Andragogy works with adults and how they learn across the lifespan - with care and financial responsibilities, a preference for facilitation and mentoring, being in control of how and what they learn, and learning that is flexible around work and family commitments. Single locations are inaccessible, but they also can reflect bad memories for a lot of us who struggled through school due to neurodivergency, mental health, or boredom. We understand that education has changed a lot, however that prior experience is enough to stop us in our tracks.

Simply put, adults learn from their peer group, therefore learning must be community-based and focused on opportunities for discussion, and we've done the research to prove this.

Heutagogy

It's also important to be aware that some young adults are ambitious and determined, with many hosting a 'hidden curriculum'. You will know this type of learner - they come to study knowing what they want out of it. They expect to be treated like an adult, although they are often not saddled with the responsibilities of being an adult.

We know that many HEIs are now moving to this type of model through Constructive Realignment in moving the responsibility to learn to the learner, but this is a relatively newer movement.
